Sunday 29th May

After a nice lie in we had a busy day. After breakfast I was given a tour of the Halden area. We went to the old bridge to Sweden that used to carry the main coastal road and from there we could see the new bridge, very impressive.

On to Rød Manor which is where the birthday party was yesterday. It had been a private house since the 17th century but from 1961 it has been a museum.

Coffee and cake with Brit and Eivind's father in his lovely old house. He knows how to look after the birds in his garden.

Next up was the castle Fredriksten which was preparing to stage Carmen in two weeks time. They were rehearsing while we were visiting.

The castle gives fantastic views over the town.

After a drive we were at a series of locks that connects the inner lake system with the sea and allows boats to travel all the way across to Stockholm. I think I gathered that this particular set of locks has the highest change in level in the world, they were certainly very deep.

A meal at the castle and then back to Brit's house to recover from it all. Many thanks to Brit and Eivind for looking after me so well and showing me the sights.
